Salt

Too much salt in the diet can contribute to high blood pressure and has been linked to increased risk of other diseases.

On average in the UK we are consuming 9g salt per day. The maximum daily intake of salt suggested by nutrition experts is 6g for adults (or around one level teaspoon). Try not to add salt in cooking or at the table or cut down gradually if this is too hard. Most of the salt in our diet is from processed foods so learn to look at food labels when out shopping.

Salt is needed in bread making because it helps improve product texture, add flavour and helps enhance its keeping qualities. The amount of salt in bread has been reduced gradually in recent years.
