Protein

Protein is often referred to as 'the building blocks of life'. It's essential for the growth, repair and renewal of our bodies. Protein can come from animal sources like meat or fish or vegetable sources like peas and cereals. Protein foods include meat, fish, eggs, cheese, pulses, peas, beans and cereals.

Bread contains vegetable protein in the form of gluten which helps to create the texture of the bread.

So bread can be used as a low fat source of protein. This means that even the simplest meal - like beans on toast, for example - can provide protein.
