Folic Acid

Folic acid or folates are essential for growing cells and for healthy blood. Folic acid is especially important if you’re pregnant (or planning on becoming pregnant) in reducing the risk of neural tube defects in babies and you need to take extra folic acid as a supplement to dietary folate.

Wholemeal bread is a natural source of folic acid. Other sources include other wholegrain cereals, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, and orange juice. Many products, like breakfast cereal, are now fortified with folic acid.

Wholemeal bread is higher in folic acid than white bread.
