Carbohydrates

Selection of different types of pastaCarbohydrates are a valuable source of energy for our body. There are three types:

Refined sugars, which should contribute to the smallest part of your food choices found in sugar added to food and drinks, jam, chocolate, cakes, biscuits.

Starchy or complex carbohydrates that should provide the base for planning your meals found in breakfast cereals, bread, oats, rice, pasta, starchy root vegetables, potatoes, chapattis.

Non-starch polysaccharide (commonly known as fibre), which helps keep our digestive system healthy and fills you up found in wholegrain cereals, fruit and vegetables and pulses.

Bread mainly consists of starchy/complex carbohydrates, which should make up the largest proportion of a healthy balanced diet.
