Food provides fuel for our bodies. Calories are used to measure the energy content of foods. All food has calories (energy) even a lettuce leaf! Some foods such as those high in fat have many more calories than say fruit and vegetables or starchy foods, as weight for weight, fat has over double the calories of protein or carbohydrate.
To meet our energy needs, nutrition experts say we should cut down on fat and eat more foods rich in complex carbohydrates, like starchy, wholegrain foods which help to fill you up, provide key vitamins and minerals and can help control your blood sugar.
It is also suggested that the average energy (calorie) requirement for a man is 2500kcal and a woman is 2000kcal.
We burn up calories through our daily activities and exercise. If we eat (take in) the same number of calories as we use up, then our weight will stay the same. If we eat more calories than we use up, we will gain weight and if we eat fewer calories than we use up, we will lose weight. If you want to increase the number of calories you use up make sure you are physically active in your everyday life like taking a walk at lunchtime, choosing the stairs rather than the lift and taking the children to the park to kick a ball around.
Understanding and having information on the calorie content of different food and drink to hand is particularly useful if you're trying to maintain a healthy weight by monitoring and controlling your calorie intake. Other measures, like decreasing
fat, sugar and alcohol intake are useful ways of cutting down on calories.
So you know how much energy is in the food you're eating, all Warburtons products carry nutrition information that shows:
- Calories per 100g of the product
- Calories per slice or per roll
The calorie per slice or roll of each product is featured on our Product
Nutrition page. The Weight Watchers
range - as its name suggests - features various reduced calorie breads.
