All bread manufacturers produce
bread in a very similar way. Bread is intrinsically low in fat when compared to
many other foods. The small amount of fat used in Warburtons products acts a processing
aid and is from plant sources and is therefore unsaturated fat. Fat is a minor
but essential ingredient of bread to ensure it is light and well-textured. The
majority of bread eaten in Britain is standard white and wholemeal and has a very
low fat content of about 2.5g per 100g. All our ingredients, including fat,
are clearly labelled on all our products. What is the difference between
saturated and unsaturated fat?
National guidelines recommend that no more than one third
of our energy intake should be from fat sources. And it
is recommended that the majority of this fat be from polyunsaturates,
which come from vegetable sources.
Fat
can be divided into two groups - saturated and unsaturated. Saturated
fat is generally solid at room temperature and it's usually from animal sources.
It's found in lard, butter, hard margarine, cheese, whole milk and anything these
ingredients are used in, such as cakes, chocolate, biscuits, pies and pastries.
It's also the white fat you can see on red meat and underneath poultry skin. The
less saturated fat you eat, the better - a high intake has been linked with an
increased risk of coronary heart disease. Unsaturated fat is usually
liquid at room temperature and generally comes from vegetable sources. Monounsaturated
and polyunsaturated fat are both included in this group. Unsaturated fat is a
healthier alternative to saturated fat and can be found in vegetable oils, such
as sesame, sunflower, soya and olive; oily fish, such as mackerel, sardines, pilchards
and salmon; and soft margarine. Why does Seeded Batch have a higher fat
content? The seeds in Warburtons Seeded Batch contribute towards the
higher fat content of this product. However, this fat is unsaturated fat, an essential
part of a healthy diet which is also found in olive oil and oily fish. What
other benefits do the seeds in Seeded Batch offer me? The naturally
occurring un-saturated fats found in seeds, the so-called omega 3 and omega 6
fats, are vital to the health of the immune system, cardiovascular system, and
the skin and hair. They are also a good source of Vitamins. What health
benefits does bread give me? Bread is an important source of fibre, a great source
of essential nutrients such as B vitamins, iron, zinc, vitamin E and Selenium
and white bread is a good source of calcium. Bread generally is also low in fat.
