This is an information gathering and research activity, which
uses a world map to present statistical and other information
about bread and world trade in wheat. It may be used in a range of
ways with Key Stage 2 or 4. Levels of complexity expected in
pupils’ responses and outcomes will vary according to tasks set
and maturity of pupils.
Introduce the activity by talking about the difference between
data and information. What turns data into useful information? Use
the map as an example of this by comparing the raw dataset for
wheat consumption with the map showing wheat consumption.
Ask pupils to explore the map and answer questions based on it.
For example: 'Which countries achieve the highest yield?' 'Which countries are self-sufficient in wheat?'
'What types
of bread do people eat in this country?'
Ask pupils to load one of the datasets into a spreadsheet and
experiment with graphing parts of the dataset. For example produce
a graph or graphs which compare the contribution of North American
countries with the contribution of African countries to the world
total for wheat production.
Ask students to consider different ways of displaying the data.
Set tasks to allow students to plan how to gather information and
present it to a particular audience using diagrams, maps, images,
text and graphical representation.
