New Bakeries
Choosing a New Site
When Warburtons move into a new area we sometimes begin by opening a depot to deliver bread.
We
can use our Bellshill (Scotland) bakery
as an example to follow the process
of how establishing a new bakery can
work.
The depot was opened in August 1995, based at East Kilbride,
In October 1995 Warburtons launched an aggressive communications programme of television, door drops, posters and bus sides advertising. This was followed up with P.R in the local press and visits to local primary schools.
By January 1996 the depot was selling 100,000 bread and morning goods units a week and the depot had expanded considerably. In September 1996 the search was on for a bakery site. In April 1997 it was announced that a new bakery was to be built at Bellshill. The depot at East Kilbride closed and the staff transferred to the new bakery in November 1997.
In January 1998 the first bread ‘Baked in Scotland’ appeared on the shelves.

Prior to this much of the bread had
been transported from our bakery near
Newcastle. By May 1998 Warburtons were
supplying bread to over 1,000 stores
throughout central Scotland.
We currently employ over 360 at Bellshill.
